Is the Narl’eru’ fey or elf?
Like Elves the Narl’eru’’s age is very long but their childhood is rather short in human standards. A Narl’eru’ ten years old is equal both mentally and physically to a human age between 18 to 20 but, a Narl’eru’ who has just turned 18 is still equal to a human at the same age. It is not until the age of 24 that one starts to see the human aging faster than a Narl’eru’. As with
elves a Narl’eru’ at the age of 500 will still look like they are in their mid 20’s. It is not until their 2,000th year that they finally start again showing
slow signs of aging and will be considered very old in their 5,000th year. Most Narl’eru’ never even reach the age of 400 because they are often killed by the fey and undead or other races mistaking them for the fey or in some special cases a drow.*
It was thought at one time the Narl’eru’ were a crossing of the Elves and Fey but that has been proven wrong. For one the Narl’eru’ are sworn enemies of the Fey. While the Fey will always try to find new ways to torture a Narl’eru’ and thus entertain themselves they will not try to breed with one. The Narl’eru’ are in themselves a separate race but can at times under very special circumstances marry and bear children with some eleven races including the drow oddly enough. The children of such unions are never Narl’eru’ they are always elven. There has to be a form of ‘recognition’ between the Narl’eru’ and elf. It is a bond of deep love and affection that opens both their minds up to each other and can never be closed. That is not to say there is no privacy of mind between the two, a Narl’eru’ never presumes to enter another’s ‘self’ unless invited to do so. The connection give the couple an extra level of intimacy not found by other races. If one dies the other, unless they have a very strong reason to live will fail and fade.
While a Narl’eru’ will become a close friend to a human they will never shall we say fall in love – it is just not possible. Pity the human who falls in love with a Narl’eru’ it is totally a one-sided affair. In most cases like this the Narl’eru’ while amused will quietly ‘mentally’ discourage the human and they will be none the wiser.
