The Narl’eru’ (The People or Players of stars)

The Narl’eru’ come from a world of eternal night. Their sun only gives off a pale blue light and is not even bright enough to prevent stars from being seen in the daytime sky. Because of the Narl’eru’’s mental abilities they are able to speak to any new races within a few minutes of contact. There are very few creatures they cannot make mental contact with but there are some races they simple cannot understand or fear to make contact, the Fey and undead are two such kinds. Please note the Narl’eru’ are NOT a space fairing race. They move from their world to others by way of portals. Their technology is equal to Toril’s races.

A Narl’eru’ has many features that one would call elven. Their ears are lobe-less and pointed; they are slender like elves; most of their facial features are very refine and they are very long living. Their skin is snow white (not translucent it’s white) with a fine velvety layer of white -peach fuzz. Like Drows their hair is also white but very thick, curly. A Narl’eru’ never cuts their hair to do so is considered to lessen one’s mental powers. Because a Narl’eru’’s hair continues growing all their long lives it is often elaborated braided and styled. You would think they spend weeks doing up their hair. This is not the case they use their mental powers to make their hair braid itself. Within minutes they are supporting a new hair style alone with colorful decorations and ribbons. If anything the Narl’eru’ love color and expressing it.

Their eyes are rather large, slightly almond shaped the irises are very pale blue that almost border on white the pupils unlike most races are metallic silver. The silver retinas help the Narl’eru’ to gather every ounce of availed light so they can see even in what one would call total darkness. They do not posses heat vision but still can easily see in the dark, even extreme dark. Fire and candlelight do not bother the Narl’eru’ - much. If they are using dark-vision it is possible to temporally blind them with torch or some magical lighting.

Because they are from a dark-world, they have no protection from yellow sunlight. If exposed to daylight their skin will start to burn, crack and blister. The sunlight can blind them if unprotected and exposed for a very long time. It is very possible to kill an unprotected Narl’eru’ with exposure to at least 8 hours of very strong bright sunlight. Unless they are quickly healed the burns and cracked skin will cause them to bleed to death.

The Narl’eru’ stand no taller than five feet and are rather fragile in appearance. Their main difference other than skin color is their hands and feet. The fingers of their hands are very long and slender. They have an extra joint in each finger for gripping branches and other surfaces. Their hands are surprisingly very strong and dexterous and can easily support their weight when hanging from their fingers.

The Narl’eru’ also use their very sensitive fingers to “Play the stars”. (See Music)

Sometimes an elf once touched by a Narl’eru’ playing. Can later, mentally hear music softly playing any time that Nar’eru’ ‘star plays’ even though they may be miles away from each other. At the first call of a bird waking to the morning the Narl’eru’ suddenly will stop and flee the coming dawn. A Narl’eru’ protected from the sunlight can play it’s light as well but it is very over powering and mentally deafening to the player.

The Narl’eru’’s feet are the most telling difference from all the humanoid races. Their feet are long, wide and have no arches or as some would say an over amount of arching. Their feet have extra joints that allow them to curl them heel to toe in a circle or at 45 degree angle if needed. Their extremely long toes can spread wide and have at the ends retractable claws like a cat. It is very shocking seeing a Narl’eru’ walk to the edge of a cliff and without missing a step continue right over the edge and down the face of the cliff. A Narl’eru’ has no fear of heights.

A game many Nalr’eru’ children play is to toss a ball to each other using their hands or a foot while standing (not hanging) upside down on the ceiling. Some think Narl’eru’ climb rocks and walls they do not. They simply walk up the surfaces just like one does on flat ground. They are not affected by gravity’s pull (except if they loose their footing and fall) so will stand straight no matter what angle of the surface. There is not much a Narl’eru’ cannot walk up on. They can cling to porous rocks just as well as smooth crystal surfaces. Loose dirt will be a bit of a problem but can be over come.

It not that unusual to see a Narl’eru’ squatting on the side of a wall or cliff either to get a better view of the stars or watching the action below them. They can sleep both laying down like most people and if needed upright or upside down as long as their feet are planted to the wall or ceiling. The skin on a Narl’eru’’s foot is very tough (it will not cut even if the Narl’eur’ walks over broken sharp glass) it has a layer of retractable cilia that help them cling to surfaces. Narl’eru’s can climb trees but mainly use their hands only while swinging from branch to branch or they will just walk up the trunks and dodge the branches on the way.

A Narl’eru’ will not cover up their feet with shoes or boots that would be like putting fingerless mittens over your hands and then be told to speak using only sign language. They will decorate their feet with tattoos, anklets, toe rings and paint their claws.

A Narl'eru' is very strong despite their fragile appearance. They can easily out do a human in endurance. They are also extremely fast and can dodge most missiles directed at them with ease. If it came to an archery match a Narl’eru’ would win easy. That is not to say they cannot not be surprised by things coming at them - but it’s rare. If a Drow used one of their famous wrist bows on a Narl’eru’ they will most likely have the dart thrown back at them in mid flight before it could even come close to scratching the Narl’eru’.

There is a limit, a Narl’eru’ will tire quickly if forced to keep up their fast pace for more than a few hours. Often Fey who have captured a Narl’eru’ will have them put in a cell covered in long retractable spikes and dart holes. They will force the Narl’eru’ to ‘Death Dance’ until they become exhausted and fail to dodge the next dart or spike.

Because of their mental abilities they can be exploited by those wishing to use a Narl’eru’ as a mental spy or locator. Some Narl’eru’ can make mental contact with an elf or human who they have never met and who is miles away by just touching a part of that person. It can be a nail clipping, hair, blood or any part of that person. In most causes the Narl’eru’ is drugged with powerful potions that enhance their mental powers while depressing their resistance to suggestion or the will of their capture. In this way, they act as a one-way mental visional gate. The person in control touches the hand or arm of the drugged Narl’eru’ while making them hold in the other hand the object that will allow the mental contact. The person being contacted has no idea that what they are seeing is being transmitted directly to their enemy far away. Because of the drugs a Narl’eru’ cannot convey to their capture the person’s thoughts, language or what they are hearing at the time only what they are seeing. Drows have been know to exploit a Narl’eru’ in this way.
