The Narl’eru’ Language -
The Narl’eru’ is a race who have no written language. Now having
said that the Narl'eru' language CAN be written down using the
common alphabet.
The
reason there is no written language is because they posses a racial mental recall system that can hold extremely large amounts of picture information that will be pass to another by touch.
When unable to directly pass information mentally or if the Narl’eru’ wants to store the information for future use they use Star Touch Stones also called Eru’Kee’. These small tear drop shaped colorful crystals record all the mental picture information from it’s Narl’eru’ author. A Narl’eru’ need only hold the stone and wish to read it for the information to pass instantly into the person’s mind. Often rather than have information over load a Narl’eru’ will touch several stones at once and in a way download the information for later recall. In turn, they will also store information in the stones that they no long wish to hold in their minds. It is not unusual to see a small bag of Eru’Kee’ hanging from a Narl’eru’’s belt.
The Narl’eru’’s spoken language is often used by children who have not developed full mental instant translation abilities. This protects the very young from mental confusion and adult orientated subjects. In adults it is very rarely used since they will often revert to the spoken language of the race they are in contact with or use the mental picture language between their own people (note the Narl’eru’ need not be in touch contact with each other if they are family, friends or lovers. Narl’eru’ who are not in normal contact with each other must touch hands to mentally speak.)
The Narl’eru’ is not a race of mind readers.
Rather they read pictures created in the mind and will naturally download only the information from
the person's section of the brain used for storage of the written and spoken racial language. A Narl’eru’ is not going to know what you are thinking exactly unless it’s really
strong or you want them to know. They can get impressions of words in their minds when people are directly thinking about them and they can get a mental picture from a person. They can by using both the information from the person’s racial language and mental pictures communicate. If a person is willing they can in a way read thoughts but it is very tiring for both the Narl’eru’ and the person being read.
For the adults the Narl’eru’’s spoken language is often fall back upon when a Narl’eru’ is confused and trying to mentally translate another new person’s mental images and spoken language mainly during first contact. In most cases this language is used by the very young, in times of stress, or when unable to decipher another’s mental picture language.
Often a Narl’eru’ when trying to express themselves or are excited will seem to rapidly pat their fingers lightly on their forehead.
This touch is used like when one is looking for a word in a dictionary. They are in effect searching mental pages. It is some times considered stuttering. For Air’rel this has become an interesting habit when she is using both words
in her language and common.
A Narl’eru’ will not ever try to read Fey or an undead creature’s mind.
It is considered polluted and will cause great pain in the Narl’eru’. Often to torture a Narl’eru’ a Fey, vampire or undead creature will force touch contact. All Narl’eru’ hate and fear the Fey. The word they use for Fey or undead is ‘Bal’eru’elmar’ and means literally ‘Dead Mind Horror.’ This is one of only a few words that do not follow the normal Narl’eru’ language. It is thought these words are not truly part of the original language but alien words that have become part of their spoken language.
The language is not like many that use capitation for its sentence structure. The Narl’eru’ has both capitalization and lower case letters in it’s language and altering it would change the meaning of the word. So it is the word not the sentence that could start with a capital. There will always be a (–) or(
.) at the end of a sentence.
One has to remember this spoken language is really for children rather than the adult. So often when spoken it will have other races words mixed into it. It is like a form of pigeon language before the mental mind language kicks in. It is more likely an adult Narl’eru’ will use another race’s language if possible. They do this to make the other person more comfortable.
Still even though they are using another races language, they will have a rather pigeon-y style of talking. Air’rel has this style of speaking since she was separated as a child from her family. Often her words have a rolling
's' or 'z' sounds to them and when frustrated or upset she will pat her forehead.
As Air’rel would say. “Yee, ‘tau Yee ‘m. ’m Yee ‘tau.”
Or in common. “I am very happy you like me. I like you too”
